The 2004 Accord Coupe utilizes one of the most advanced safety systems available today, earning it a coveted 5-star safety rating in NHTSA frontal and side-impact tests.* The body has been designed with computerized finite-element modeling and stress-analysis software, and for 2004, side curtain airbag coverage has been expanded to include most 4-cylinder EX models.

Honda uses techniques like this to create a body with exceptional bending and torsional rigidity. The result is a passenger cabin that can withstand impact forces while protecting the occupants. And of course, every Accord is equipped with a standard anti-lock braking system (ABS), dual-stage front airbags (SRS), front side airbags, side curtain airbags† and sturdy pillars to maximize occupant protection in the case of a rollover.

*National Highway Traffic Safety Administration frontal crash test: December 2002; side crash test: January 2003.

†Side curtain airbags available on EX with Leather and EX V-6 models.

SAFETY FEATURES

In the event of a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, the dual-stage front airbags inflate and deflate in a fraction of a second, and are designed to help prevent serious head and upper-body injuries.
Front and rear 3-point seat belts ride across the lap and chest and help restrain occupants during sudden stops or impact.
An anti-lock braking system is standard on all Accord models. It helps the driver retain steering control during hard braking.
The side curtain airbag module is positioned along the side of the headliner. In the event of a sufficient side impact, this system will activate to help provide protection for both front and rear passengers. A new type of inflator provides an exceptionally quick inflation time. These advanced airbags are available on EX models, standard on EX with Leather and EX V-6.
The front and rear crush zones absorb energy and minimize the amount of impact energy that enters the passenger cabin during moderate-to-severe full-frontal and offset-frontal impacts.
The dual side-impact door beams help provide protection in a side impact.
Side airbags inflate to help protect the driver's or front passenger's upper body. Honda took this a step further with its Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), which utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seat and seatback to detect the weight, height and seating position of the occupant. If a child or small-statured adult is in the deployment path of the side airbag, sensors deactivate it to prevent potential head injuries from the airbag itself.
All Accord V-6 models feature a standard Honda electronic Traction Control System (TCS). Working with the ABS sensors and the electronic control unit (ECU), TCS monitors front-wheel slippage. If detected, TCS activates one or more brake calipers to slow the spinning wheel to regain traction. TCS also helps maintain stability when starting out on surfaces with split coefficients of friction.
The Accord's body design plays a key role in helping achieve its exceptional rigidity and enviable safety rating. It also helps minimize noise and vibration, and even contributes to the Accord's enhanced ride and handling characteristics. Honda engineers have increased the body's torsional rigidity while maintaining excellent bending rigidity.
