The Civic Coupe embodies Honda's commitment to safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)* has awarded the Civic Coupe with side airbags its highest rating, 5-stars, for protection in both frontal and side impacts. The Civic's front dual-stage airbags are designed to deploy at one of two rates, based on the severity of the collision and seat-belt use, to help avoid injury.

SAFETY FEATURES

In the event of a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, the dual stage front airbags inflate and deflate in a fraction of a second, and are designed to help prevent serious head and upper-body injuries.
Front and rear 3-point seat belts ride across the lap and chest and help restrain occupants during sudden stops or impact.
Civic's anti-lock braking system (ABS) uses a special modulator to pulse the brakes to help prevent wheel lockup. This helps the driver retain steering control when braking hard (EX).
The front and rear crush zones provide driver and passenger protection in moderate-to-severe full-frontal and offset-frontal impacts.
For an integrated appearance, the Civic has body-colored bumpers, installed with a minimal-gap technique that smoothes the transition between body and bumper.
Now available for all Civic models is a side airbag system that features an Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS). The OPDS uses special sensors in the passenger's seatback that determine if a child or small-statured adult is leaning into the side airbag deployment path, in which case the airbag will not deploy.
The dual side-impact door beams help provide protection in a side impact.
All five seats are equipped with 3-point seat belts. The rear seat features the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) mounting system for use with compatible child seats.
