What do you call a commitment to providing advanced safety technology in every vehicle you sell, regardless of price? We call it "Safety for Everyone." And that philosophy is alive and well at Honda.

Through a comprehensive and evolving approach to safety, Honda seeks to provide a high level of occupant and pedestrian protection in our cars and trucks, regardless of size or price, as well as increased crash compatibility with other vehicles. The NHTSA awarded the Element five stars in frontal crash-test ratings*—the best possible for frontal impacts. But then, safety is always a priority in the minds of Honda engineers. The Element has strong vertical beams that are formed when the stoutly reinforced side cargo doors are closed and connect with the reinforced frame, side sills and roof. It all adds up to a seriously tough passenger compartment.

*National Highway Traffic Safety Administration frontal crash test: March 2003. Government star ratings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).
SAFETY FEATURES

The side-impact door beams help provide optimal structural protection in a side impact.
The system immobilizes the engine's fuel injection and ignition, and only a matching digital code in the ignition key can override it. When the driver puts the key into the ignition switch, the switch transmits a signal that reads the code in the key. If the key code agrees with the code in the Immobilizer unit, the powertrain control module (PCM) starts the engine.
The Element has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) that uses a special modulator to pulse the brakes to help prevent wheel lockup. This helps the driver retain steering control when braking hard. The Electronic Brake Distribution system (EBD) balances the front/rear braking forces.
In the event of a frontal impact, the dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags (SRS) inflate and deflate in a fraction of a second, and are designed to help prevent head and upper-body injuries.
All four seats are equipped with 3-point seat belts. The rear seats feature the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) mounting system for use with compatible child seats.
Front 3-point seat belts with an automatic tensioning system ride across the lap and chest to help restrain occupants during sudden stops or impact.
In the event of a side impact, the side airbag inflates to help protect the driver's or front passenger's upper body. Plus, the Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) uses sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect the height and seating position of the occupant. These sensors deactivate the side airbag if a child or small-statured adult is leaning into the deployment path.(EX)
