Honda's race-bred VTEC® (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) helps the EX make an ample 127 horsepower and, in its lean-burn version, allows the 117-hp HX to get better mileage. Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) ensures that all Civic Coupes, including the 115-hp DX and LX, meet Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards.

Plus, there are no needed tune-ups for the first 110,000 miles. A 5-speed manual transmission makes for sporty fun. In the available 4-speed automatic transmission, Grade Logic Control ends gear hunting on hills. And the continuously variable transmission (CVT) available on HX offers performance like a manual with the ease of an automatic.

ENGINEERING FEATURES

The MacPherson Strut Spring Damper Units help shorten the front end and also free up more space for impact-absorbing structural members.
At the rear, a double wishbone suspension is used. The system features a special toe-control arm and an innovative compliance arm and compliance bushing that flex to absorb bump impacts, allowing a smoother, more comfortable ride. The toe-control arm and bushing are also designed to impart additional stability during hard braking, so the Civic tracks straight and stable.
The adoption of an active, electronically controlled linear solenoid for the automatic transmission's lockup torque converter improves fuel economy by 3 percent and results in smoother operation.
The lightweight, compact 5-speed manual transmission features improved shifter feel, lower shift effort and greater durability over the previous generation. Manual transmission vibration has also been reduced, thanks to a new flexible flywheel design.
Much of the legroom increase comes from the rear suspension's highly compact design, which frees up more space for passengers and cargo, and along with a new compact exhaust system, makes it possible to eliminate the floor hump, giving the Civic a roomy, flat rear-floor area.
EX models have a power moonroof with tilt feature, which allows maximum headroom within the car for improved comfort. The moonroof also has a sliding sunshade that opens with the roof and can be closed to block sunlight.
The Civic Coupe features an integrated rear-window antenna. This approach eliminates the need for a mast antenna, and is unaffected by operation of the rear window defroster. Also, unlike a mast antenna, it cannot be damaged during an automated car wash.
HX and EX models feature Honda's VTEC® technology for greatly reduced emissions and higher fuel economy. Employing many refinements in the interest of cleaner combustion, VTEC® technology is based on Honda's VTEC variable-valve-timing system, which promotes efficient, lean combustion at mid and high rpm.
DX models feature a standard 80-watt AM/FM audio system with 4 speakers and clock. HX and LX models add a CD player. EX models feature a high-powered AM/FM/CD audio system with 6 speakers for added audio quality.
Air conditioning with electronic controls is standard on LX and EX models, and available on all other models. The system uses an environmentally friendlier non-CFC refrigerant and has a greater cooling capacity than the previous generation.
With 12.9 cu. ft. of cargo volume, the Civic Coupe has an abundance of storage area. In keeping with the precision assembly of exterior panels, the trunk area is fully lined and carpeted.
The system immobilizes the engine's fuel injection and ignition, and only a matching digital code in the ignition key can override it. When the driver puts the key in the ignition switch, it transmits a signal that reads the code in the key. If the code agrees with the code in the powertrain control module, or PCM, the PCM lets the driver start the engine. Since there are around 1 million codes, it's practically impossible for a thief to program the key with the right code.
