The Element has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) that uses a special modulator to pulse the brakes to help prevent wheel lockup. This helps the driver retain steering control during hard braking. The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system balances the front/rear braking forces during dynamic loading.
Dual-Stage Front Airbags (SRS)
In the event of a frontal impact, the dual-stage front airbags (SRS) inflate at different rates depending upon crash severity and seat belt use, and are designed to help prevent head and upper-body injuries.
Front Side Airbags with Passenger-Side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS)
In the event of a moderate-to-severe side impact, the side airbag inflates to help protect the driver's or front passenger's upper body. Plus the Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect the height and seating position of the occupant. If a child or small-statured adult is leaning into the deployment path of the side airbag, sensors deactivate it.
LATCH and Child-Seat Tether Anchors
All four seats are equipped with 3-point seat belts. The rear seats feature the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) mounting system for use with compatible child seats.
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control
The electronically controlled Brake Assist system on V-6 models is designed to help drivers apply full braking force in an accident-avoidance situation. This assists the driver in obtaining full braking performance in an emergency.
Seat Belts with Front Seat Pretensioners
Front 3-point seat belts with an automatic tensioning system ride across the lap and chest to help restrain occupants during sudden stops or impact.
Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor
The Element provides standard side curtain airbags. In addition to the protection they offer outboard occupants in the event of a side impact, these side curtain airbags are fitted with a rollover sensor to help provide protection in a rollover. Most side curtain airbags in this class are designed to provide side-impact protection, but rarely do they also provide protection in the event of a rollover.
Side-Impact Door Beams
The side-impact door beams help provide optimal structural protection in a side impact.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
This system monitors the pressure in all four tires, and alerts the driver before pressure loss in any tire becomes significantly low.
Wave Key and Immobilizer System
The system immobilizes the engine's fuel injection and ignition, and only a matching digital code in the ignition key can override it. When the driver puts the key into the ignition switch, the switch transmits a signal that reads the code in the key. If the key code agrees with the code in the Immobilizer unit, the powertrain control module (PCM) starts the engine.
